Partnering Dentist Brian Kelly comes to the rescue again

About Stewart Tucker Lundy: Stewart Tucker Lundy, an actor with a visible disability, played the only sitting U.S. president with a visible disability when he portrayed FDR in Phamaly Theatre Company’s 2017 production of “Annie.” A month later, he was elected onto the Board of Directors as Phamaly’s designated Community Advocate. “I’m like one of those people who found a new religion and wants to preach about it all the time,” he told The New York Times. “I’ve got the Phamaly religion. I want to tell everyone about it.” Stewart, a quadriplegic since a diving accident at age 14, serves on the City of Denver’s Public Arts Commission as well as other committees working to make Denver more accessible. “He makes it his mission to show that those who are disabled lead extraordinary lives,” says his wife, Marci,” says his wife, Marci. He also sits on the board of the Warm Cookies of the Revolution civics health club (founder by Buntport Theater’s Evan Weissman). He also runs a communications consultancy, and his own production company (Perspective Media.) Stewart was born in Camp Springs, Maryland, and graduated from Howard University with a B.A. in communications. He moved to Colorado Springs in the mid-1990s, and to Denver in 2010. He is also a podcaster and is currently working toward getting his pilot’s license.

His medical story: Stewart found himself severely underinsured when it became necessary for him to have extensive dental care, including multiple extractions and root canals. “He was in the kind of discomfort no individual would want to suffer through, simply because of being a person with a disability and having very limited health care,” said Marci.

How we have helped: The Denver Actors Fund has a partnering dentist in Dr. Brian Kelly DDS, who accepts a limited number of emergency cases each year as his personal, in-kind donation to The DAF with his kind associates at the Dental Center at Thornton Plaza. Dr. Kelly performed all of the necessary work Stewart needed over several visits. The value of Dr. Kelly’s services to a regular patient would have come to $2,309. Instead, Stewart paid nothing, To date, the total value of Dr. Kelly’s service to the Denver Actors Fund is $80,000 since 2017. It’s no wonder that this year, 5280 Magazine included Dr. Kelly among Denver’s top dentists as chosen by his peers for the 12th year in a row. Dr. Kelly is himself a dancer and a veteran of four Broadway productions.

‘Stewart was in the kind of discomfort no individual would want to suffer through.’

A message from Stewart: “Dr. Kelly and all of his staff are Earthly angels. I have noticed that I smile more when people take pictures of me, and that I feel a lot more confident speaking to people. I feel as though they are not looking at me and criticizing me. I think to myself instead, ‘They are admiring my smile because Dr. Kelly did such a wonderful job.’ I am truly grateful for what you have done for me.”

ONGOING: “Quarantine Week by Weak” is a new photographic coffee-table book by Susannah McLeod and her wife, Chloe McLeod, who chronicled their home life during the COVID19 shutdown with a light-hearteded photo series documenting their lives during quarantine. They produced more than 35 sets of humorous photos comparing the beginning of quarantine to later in the “stay-at-home” period. Susannah pulled out her camera and we started to play,” said Chloe McLeod. As popularity for the series grew on Instagram and after a feature in Westword, the couple started exploring options to publish the series as a book to benefit The Denver Actors Fund. To order, visit http://mcleod9creative.com/shop/quarantine-week-by-weak-photo-book. This project is generously sponsored by: The Albritton Family; Natalie Bowen and Jim Corbett; Dave Dyer; Julie Dyer; and Denise Gentilini and Lynette Prisner.
